Estrella Galicia is the main beer produced by Spanish brewer Hijos de Rivera. Originating in the province of A Coruña in the north-west of Spain, the title of the beer translates to ‘Star of Galicia’, referencing the local region’s name. The brewery came into being in 1906, founded by señor José María Rivera Corral on returning to Spain after travelling around South America. Initially brewing at a local beer and ice factory, the brewery has continued to produce their famous Estrella Galicia for the past century, apart from a halt to business caused by both the Spanish Civil War and World War Two. The brewery remains fully family-owned and run to this day, with José’s great grandson currently in charge.
Estrella Galicia 0.0 is the company’s alcohol-free version of their signature pale lager, first released in 2011, and is produced using a method they call ‘interrupted fermentation’. The yeast they use is only allowed to ferment the beer’s wort for a maximum of 12 hours, and then they halt the fermentation process, probably by crash cooling the beer. I’ve reviewed many non-alcoholic beers that use a process similar to this in production, and whilst there are some great nolo drinks made this way, others tend to retain a worty taste. So where does Estrella Galicia 0.0 appear on this malty spectrum?
Pouring from the bottle we get a clear golden coloured liquid with a fair bit of visible carbonation. A fair fluffy head does appear but is not retained for long. On the nose we get cereal grains and sweet malt, which has a toffee tinge to it. Pretty standard stuff so far.
On tasting we get a slightly sweet cereal malt taste with a touch of corn in the background. Further mouthfuls present us with some crisp bitterness and light pilsner malt, which adds a nice point of interest to an otherwise unremarkable taste. The body is rather watery, though the carbonation is a decent level. We end with a short slightly sweet, slightly bitter finish.
Not too worty, and actually quite a crisp clean lager taste here, but nothing to make it stand above the other numerous AF lagers out there. As always it’s great to have choice in the alcohol-free world, and if you chose Estrella Galicia 0.0 you probably wouldn’t be disappointed. But neither would you be astounded.

Estrella Galicia Alcohol-Free Lager Review
Summary
A perfectly fine non-alcoholic lager, maybe a bit on the malty side, but nothing game-changing.
